WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held last (Monday) evening. Present — Messrs G. S. Bridge (chairman), J". W. Baker, E. Dixon, F. M. Spurdle, F. Haselden, Fred Pirani, E. A. Adams, F. Y. Lethbridge, M.H.E., and Rev. J. Ross. Accounts. — General account, credit, J21259 18s Sd; binding account, ordinary, debit .£1468 Is 9d; special, grant, in hand, £64>5 8s 3d. APPOINTMENTS. Ohaka. — Jkiss A. Voysey, appointed mistress. mataipu. — Miss Mantle appointed mistress . Porewa. — Miss B. Stewart appointed teacher. . ■ Utiku. — Mis 3 B. Anderson 'appointed teacher. Maungahoe. — It was oecided to deduct the teacher's ealary from the Committee's capitatibn. Relieving Teacher. — Roy Anderson appointed. College Street.-^Juanita Flyger and Clara Rashleigh appointed pupil teachers. Campbell Street. — Hilda Seater transferred from Mangaiweka. Mangaweka.^r- Susan Pitcher appointed pupil teacher. Leave of Absence. — Applications from the following were 'granted — F. C. Campbell, M. Mellish, M. Grant, A. M. Carson, W. Tompkius, T. Case-. E. Wallace, and 11 . Seater. Wanganui.— A letter^ from Mr J. Aitken, asking the Board to hold an inquiry re inspection report of March 4, 1902, was received, and it was resolved not to re-open the matter. GENERAL BUSINESS. Leave of Absence. — It was ' decided, in order to as fa* as possible equalise the the motion of ' the chairman, that in loss to teachers through deduction from salaries through illness, salaries shall not be paid during ' the time of illness, but at the end of each quarter a calculation shall be made of the cost to the Board for relieviug teachers outside of capitation of 6d per head and any provision ,1 or relieving teachers made out of the general account of the Board, that this shall be deducted from the salaries withheld proportionately in the balance of salary paid to the teachers interested ; where no relieving teacher is sent the teacher's salary be paid. WANGANUI HIGH . SCHOOL.— The Secretary for Education wrote: — In reply to your application for a grant for ' an addition to the Wanganui District High School, I am directed fto inform you that it appears from the information given in the form that in the three sectional schools — Boys' School, Girls' School, and Infants' School — there is ample space for the total number in averago attendance; in fact, there is space for about 940. In these circumstances it would seem to be a matter for the Board so to organise these three schools that one of them shall not be over-crowded, and, consequently, the Minister does not see its way to comply with tjie Board's application. — It was decided to represent to the Government the fact that the suggestion, made could not be carried out. SEDGEBROOK.— The Secretary for Education wrote: — In reply to your let-ter-of the Ist July, making application *for a> grant for the erection of a school at Sedgebrook, Eastown, I am directed to se,y that the Minister is at present unable to see his way to comply with the Board's request. I may point out that beyond the bare requirements of the form, no information has been supnlie*!

COMMIT! KF/S GRANT.— The Secretary for Education infor-med the Board that the 9d extra capitation vote had lapsed.
MAOST^. — From Education Department, approving of the Action of th~ Board in excluding Maoris from th^ Waitotnra school.
PRANKTNG. — It was decided to urge the Government not" to withdraw the franking privilege- from the Board. — In the course of discussion, it was pointed out that the only fund from which the nosta^e could bo paid would be from the School Committee grants.
LINTON. — Application for , enlargement of referred . to Building Committee: Increased school accommodation to be at a future date.
HIBIITANGL— It was decided to open the school in a biiilding offered by Mr Gibbs, and that as soon as the Government, grant is received the saliool ba built. «
ROTOKARE.— An application for a school at the junction of Rotokaro and Eraser Roads was received, amd it was decided to make application ,for a grant for a 60 school.
RAKETAPAUMA.— It was decided to authorise Mr W. E. Spooncr to establish a school.
KOEIKA. — It was decided to re-open the Koeka school.
GLEN NEVIS.— The chairman was instructed to visit the Turakina Valley and report as to a new building for this school. BULLS. — It' was decided to inform the Committee ' that i the Board could not increase the capitation grant, but it wa<* anticipated ttyat an extra .grant would be received for Committees this year. In regard to an application for assistance towairds cottage gardens, it was pointed out that the capitation earned would be paid to the Committees.
MANAIA. — In reference to the application for a hisfh school, it was decided
to inform the^ Committee that new regulations are being framed by the Government, amd that the Committee be afked to state the liumbsr of pupils who would attend the hi<rh school.
MARTON-^-It was decided to inform the Committee that unless the high school attendance is kept up a teacher at v lower salary would have to be appointed.
PATEA.— TV offer of the Committeo to makp up any deficiency in the district high school from July 1 was accepted. pointed out that if such increase is ne--eessary it might bp met by a fee from 1 students who by that time would be earning lai*s;cr Ava<?es than at first. CAMPBELL STREET.— -The^ Committee asked that the pupils who had passed Standard VI. should be allowed to remain until the end of ILtc year, instead of being sent on to the District High School. — It was decided, on the motion of Mr Fred Pirani, seconded by Mr ]3ridge, that the Campbell Street Committee bo informed that ,the Board cannot see its way to agree to pupils who have passed Standard VI. being allowed lo remain at the school until the end of the year; but ' would/ recommend the to endeavour ta make arrangements with the College Street Committee in regard to the attendance of pupils, and the Committee be recommended to arrauge au interview with the mover. PATEA. — Mr Adams moved that the head teacher of the Patea School be informed that the school grounds are under the charge of the School -Committee, and that he must .comply with any resolution passed by that body. — Seconded by the chairman, and carried.
STAN WAY. —A request fcr leave to alter the holidays was not entertained, ac beinp; against the regulations. The Board Uien wont into committee.
