AMALGAMATED SOCIETY OF RAILWAY SERVANTS.
Social and Dance.
< The annual social and dance given by the Amalgamated Society of Railway ■ Servants was held last (Friday) night in the Assembly - Rooms, and was a pronounced success in every way. There was a very large attendance, including visitors from Palmerston North and New Plymouth, and all places between, nearly 100 couples altogether being present. The Chairman (Mr Roulston) read apologies from Mr Beattie (General Manager of New Zealand Railways) and . Mr A. D. Willis, M.H.R., for their absence, both gentlemen wishing the Society every success. The room was prettily decorated with flags of all descriptions, Chinese lanterns, greenery, estc., which gave it a jbf'isfht appearance. In this connection, the committee desire to thank Messrs Purser and Son, Mouten and Coates, A. T. White, and Williams and Harper, for the kind loan of flags and decorations. The music was supplied by Mrs Lockett and Miss Gilby, and was excellent, as was also the floor, thus rendering the, enjoyment of the, dancers complete — except, perhaps, that the hall was rather 100 crowded. The Ms.C—M essrs C. W. Hutton and G. Clarke — were • most attentive to their duties, thereby adding greatly to the success of the gathering. Dnrinet the evening songs were simer by Messrs Feasey (2), W. Armstrong, Pickering (3), and Groombridge (2) — who was vociferously encored on each occasion — whilst Mr Gilbv contributed a violirf. solo and Mr Buckley a cornet solo, the latter being rendered in the usual finished style characteristic of this brilliant player. -Altogether the concert part of the programme was very successful, and the company were heairtily pleasod with each and all of Hie items, so kindly and freely given by the performers. Mention must not be omitted of one very important item — Ili<* excellent e"t>per nrovided by Mr T. Hodson — who thoroughly deserved the hirrh praise bestowed by all present on the quality and nuantity of the good things set before them. Danciucr was kept i-> with unpihated vigour until close on four o'clock this raorninor, when the function — onp nf the # best ( conducted and pleasantest of the season — was brought to a close.
