FOULING HIS NEST.

Under the somewhat ambiguous heading of "«Hi-riuo. „p {]j6j 6 Citizens," the editor of the Wauganui Chronicle in hia issue of to-day devotes at least a column and a half of his paper to "a diatribe, ostensibly with the object of insistence that the public announcement in the press calling the meeting of citizens re the BaetiluParapara Koad is -not sufficiently explicit. But unfortunately for him, he lets the cat out of the bag! In fact, he reminds us of the little animal who on being pursued pokes his nose in the sand ' and thinks thereby he is not observed. The thin veil of sarcasm in the article referred to is lifted to public gaze when blighted hopes of Parliamentary preferment are remembered; and, above all, it should be remembered that the dog-in-the-manger policy is absolutely a bad one. May we give a little wholesome advice to our esteemed contemporary. May- we say ihab instead of carping at and criticising (for political ends no doubt) the . actions . of those who have the best interests of the district at heart, he should push energetic action in the direction of the road so desired. Thereby he would earn by assisting a movement for the good of the country at large and this district in particular, the sympathies of the community. As it is, he by his extraordinary attitude in traversing what has been done and suggesting the likely lugubrious outcome, has laid himself open to grave censure from the public, and he should know he is only "fouling his own nest."
