State Governor, in the course of a lecture at Fitzroy on the Navy and Empire, said he considered England's present position satisfactory, both absolutely and relatively to her probable enemies. The British Navy had never been so strong and efficient in peace time as now. In the mefens of building and equipping warships America was the only country which could hope to rival Britain. He regarded war between America and Britain a crime unthinkable. • No probable enemy of England had its own supply of steam coal, a vital need. Sir John Forrest said he was afraid Australia had been so long accustomed to peace and security that it had' begun to act as if the difficulty . and danger would never come.
