'/ NELSON, June 9. A fire"* at, jStisses Gascoignc's, Hardy Street East, 'last' night destroyed the rear portion of the building, together with the contents, including the property of the boarders'. The outbreak originated by an explosion of a small kerosene heater. The building was old, and soon burnt out, especially as the water siipply w&s inadequate, tout $he mam front building- was savefl. One hoarder lost £22 in a notebook. Among-the losers are Messrs Coney, Campbell; Deshler, Stowe (Blenheim Bank of New Zealand), in whose room the fire originated, Pattersori, Strauchan, Dallaston (WeHing£&ji).» iSome boarders were insured on their clothing and effects, and others uninsured. The building was insured in the >New Zealand office for £500 ; also an insurance of 1 £500 on the front building, which was saved, though there was considerable damage by water also.
