AUSTRALIAN FINANCES.

N.S. Wales Attorney-General in

Reply.

Press Association.— Telegraph.-Copyright.

Received February 23, 9.27 a.m.

LONDON, February 22.

The Hon. Mr Wise, Attorney-General for New South' Wales, interviewed, said the recent discussions as to the solvency of New South Wales were merely the outcome of a fantastic dream. New South Wales' borrowings-recently were large, owing .to the purchase of four millions of wharf frontage, which already returned a net profit, after providing a sinking fund. The real assets in Australia were Parliament's unlimited power of taxation. The Australians were the lightest taxed people in the world. He scorned the repudiation of the charges of extravagance of the Federal Government, which were unfounded. Tlie Commonwealth was really too parsimonious. The salaries were lower than the principal States of the Federation. The increased New South Wales revenue of over a million was a very useful addition.
