Dunedin, presented the awards and prizea to the pupils of the two' NelsOn Colleges to-night, making an effective speech. The Nelson College , Governors to-day resolved to accept the proposals of tlie Government to provide education at the colleges for 'boys and girls having passed the sixth standard under 14t. Mr William; Richardson, the well-known temperance lecturer, ' 'tyho served two weeks imprisonment for the non-payment of a fine in connection with troule at Sir Joseph Ward's nleeting, was released today. He was demonstratively welcomed this evening, a procession .of several thousand 'passing through the city. Richardson was continually cheered, and delivered an .address.

To-Jiigh£'s Gazette contains the return of acreage under- corn crops and the amount of grain on hand. The area of wheat • this year, for threshing *is' 194,278 acres, an increase of 30,812. ' The .area of oats for threshing is 481,461 acres; an increase of 75,537. For chaffing, feeding, etc., there are 204,760 acres, an increase of 5252. Barley for threshing 1 , 27,905, an increase of 1301 acres; for feeding", down' with stock, 2105 acres, a decrease of 431 acres. Rye, foribhreshing, 1729 acres, an increase of 189 acres; maize for threshing, 12,029> acrps' a decrease /of 747 acre's; peas,, for threshing, 860 acres, an increase of 135 acres; beans, for threshing, 3033 acres, a dfecrpaso of 471 acres; hops, 788 acres, a decrease of 56 acres.
The quantity now on hand is 180,4211 b, a decrease oori r 55,2771 b. . As -anticipated, says the return,, there is a considerable shrinkage of wheat on •hand, the figures being — This year, 1,230,785 bushels; last year, 3,182,,007, a decrease of 1,95^,222 bushels. In oats on hand a large decrease is also shown, viz., 1,715,429 bushels " for' 1902-3, as' against -2,771,286 bushels for the previous year, being a decrease of 1,055,857.
