At a -meeting of the Marine Board a letter was received from the 'secretary of ,fche New Zealand Marine Department, ask-; ing whether certain evidence given at the Elingamite inquiry to the effect that Cap--tain Deary, the Board's surveyor, allowed the steamer to leave port without making sure the .boats were provided with compasses, was tfrue. Captain Deary states that although his note-book showed no detailed- account of the last inspection, he was perfectly certain each of the four lifeboats contained the articles insisted on in the regulations. If it had not been so he /would never have given the necessary certificate.
