Mr David Mills, of the U.S.S. Company, had an interview with Federal Premier Sir E. Barton with reference, to a renewal of the Vancouver -mail subsidy, which expires in May^ The negotiations are for the pre- .. SBP.& prJ-Yatovbut-iViB undei'BtoodvtfiafcwfeheM question 'of arranging the -subsidy on v ne^ basis, was raised, and, incidental.thereto an improvement of the service by introducing a superior, class of steamers, running at a higher speed* Some time ago' the Canadian. Government proposed that Australia-sh6uld join in subsidising a line of freight steamers to Australia/ via tho Cape. Sir<E. Barton replied that Australia was not prepared to, participate.
