A deputation consisting of the Rev. Mir Dewdney and Messrs Bridge and Aitken^ waited upon the. Hon. James Carroll, Minister for Native Affairs, thiß morning, to press upon the -Government the desirability of keeping/the native areas of up-river territory , free' from liquor licenses. The hon. gentleman said that with- a litw far- . liament, and in view of the recent pronouncement ' throughout thp country on, the general 'question, it was impossible t« say what would be done; but he tho&s-v he could safely say that on this, as on other, questions, the Government would give dne consideration- to the opinions ot the k natives themselves, as expressed through their representatives, the Maori Councils.
