KANGAROO HUNT IN ENGLAND,
A very extraordinary' circumstance occured scio years ago in West Surrey,' inasmuch as there was a genuine kangaroo hunt in the vicinity of Dorking; It appears that a kangaroo had escaped from a pen in which it had. been confined at Wotton,' and ran wild in the woods for several weeks, bidding defiance to all attempts' to eitect its capture. On Septem- 1 ber 30, 1830, however, a regular hunting party was formed to accomplish this object. The clever, pack of boagl6s kept at YVotton (the seat of a Mr "Evelyn, at that time the member of Parliament), with huntsman, whipper-in, and a train of fol- , lowers, started for Abinger common, whoro the' kangaroo had been Been on the praviday. Npt. finding him "at homc"theri v , the party proceeded to the Duke of Norfoik's copses in the immediate neighbourhood. Almost ' immediately the -extraordinary animal. broke cover, evidently determined to show sport. The beagles were . speedily on. the scent, and off T.bey dashed to Mr Evelyn's wood, and then made a 1 circle of it by returning- to the copses. Then they made for.' • Abinget Rectory, where a check of a few?,Ainutes threatened to jspoil sport; but " t^Mnd^ "Tally-ho !" was soon the cry, and b'lE. they went agum, the kangaroo .once more trying the Duke's copses. The animal being fprced to abaiidou this, his favourite; spot, ' the chase got warm, and with dogs and men in close .pursuit, the kangaroo reached the foot of Leith Hill. At last, hard pressed, the animal took refuge in a pond on High Ash Farm, Abinger, where a groom succeeded in capturing him, though not without receiving a fraternal embrace from which his shoulder suffered for some daj<3.
