' In the House of Commons, in Committee, it was decided by 279 to 193 to maintain the corn tax. ■■ Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman said he believed the tax had raised hopes and fears in different quarters of threatening friction between the Motherland and the colonies. Mr Austin Chamberlain said the Opposition ask Sir Michael Hicks-Beach to declare that Britain will never, under. any circumstances, consent to 'preferential relations with the colonies, but it would be a strange proceeding to slam the door in the faces of the colonial Premiers, and condemn their proposals .before hearing tWn.
