Lloyd's return of shipping casualties ' during the quarter from July 'to September last gives the total number of steamers lost a* forty-one representing « net tonnage of 40,754. Of these fortyone steamers twelve were British-own-ed. Of the total number 26 came under the heading wrecked, one was posted as miasiner. five foundered, seven were lost in collision, and two were burnt. The casualties to sailing craft were much heavier, 79 vessels, aggregating 50,796 tons, being lost. Norwegian owners were the biggest losers with 19, 15 were credited to America, and 12 to Britain.
