The Boers who came in to Vredefdrd expected 15,000 troops to witness their surrender, and were surprised and gratified to find only General Elliot and staff.

Thanksgiving services wero held in many Anglican churches in Cape Colony, and similar services wer* held in the chnfehos and chapelt throughout Britain, and the embassies abroad and many Americans attended the services on the Continent.
