THE WESLEYAN CONFERENCE

(Par United Press Association.) DUNEDIN, March 10. This evening a session was held to . consider the work of God in the Churches. Statistical returns were given as follow: — Churches 288, .other preaching places i 565, ministers 118, home missionaries 25, local preachers 546, class leaders 145, Church members 12,494, on trial 400, communicants 1268, junior members ' 1596, Sunday Schools 276, teachers ,• 2154, scholars 19,096, attendants 'at public worship C 7,781. The returns show an increase of. 741, including 261 Maoris. It was decided to hold the next Con■ference in.HhrigtchuiJch.__; = — It was agreed to appoint a Commission in each district, to visit the circuits paying less than the minimum stipend, and confer with the local officials with the object of securing an increase. An interesting point was raised regarding the name and legal designation of Church counsels. The .opinion indicated the necessity of a short Parliamentary Act to secure the required change. A deputation was appointed to interview/ the Premier, relating thereto. The Bey Lewis moved a resolution approving of daily reading of the Bible in public schools, a text-hook, irith the necessary explanations, being provided. Adopted. Resolutions were carried dealing with the questions of Sabbath observance and gambling. The report of the Connexional Fire Insurance Committee was presented. Three hundred and four trusts pay levies; there were two small losses only during the year. The financial statement showed. 'the amount on deposit to be .£550, and the credit balance on current account .£ll7. The report of the committee appointed to inquire concerning the establishment, of an orphanage was presented, and resolutions were carried dealing with the question. The Rev Slade was appointed' a foreign mission deputation' to the South Island in May and June, and the North Island in January and February. The Rev Baumber proposed resolutions relating to the appointing of chaplains for the Volunteer . and Permanent Forces. The Conference agreed. The Committee was also authorised, if a Tenth Contingent is sent to South Africa, to arrange with the Government to provide a chaplain. The official signing of the journal takes place to-morrow.
