THE CONVENT SCHOOL ENTERTAINMENT.

Those who attended the prize day entertainment in the Opera. House last (Thursday) evening in connection with the Sacred Heart Wanganui Convent Select School — and the number was very large, for all the available sitting accommodatticn in the circle and stalls was taxed to the utmost — were rewarded by "participating in a most enjoyable programme. The entertainment was undoubtedly the best yet given by the Convent pupils, and that is saying a good deal, for the previous efforts have all been of a high class .order. .-Follow-" ing was the full programme: — Pianoforte solo, "'Espiegle'" (Joachim Bait), Miss M. Barrie; tableau, "New.Zealand,", with chorus by pupila of St. Joseph's School"; pianoforte duet, "Grand Valse" (Schulhoff), Muses Buby Perrett and Emily Gibbons ; vocal trio, "The ; Distant Chimes" (S. Glover), Misses Amy Hyde, Ada Dalziell, and Ellie Moroney; Good-night Drill, pupils of Sacred Heart Infant School; vocal solo, "O Mans Stella" (M. Dramatis persona! : Miss Carnduff (an bid lady, _rjeh,J>u\inise.rlyf, Miss NManson; Fanny and Mildred '(two young cousins .'of. the old lady,j who have lived ' at the Castle since . childhood). of Miss Carnduff), Miss.'E. Moroney; Mr McNaughton (solicitor), - Miss A. Schaeffer; Mis McNaughton* (wife of the above), Miss A. Hyde; Biddy (maid of all work at the Castle), Miss- Dora" Tait; XWgy (sister of the store), Miss N. Eigarlsford. The vocal and -instrumental items were tastefully and expressively. * rendered, reflecting credit alike on the skill of the performers and the capable, instructresses at the Convent. Miss Pinches's song was deservedly encored, and as a study in vocal gymnastics was most' artistically given. The feature of the entertainment was the series of tableaux, representing "The Drill of All Nations," each one of which waa alono b worth paying the admission money to see.;Tho audience was most enthusiastic as the various pretty scenes were exposed to view, and as representatives''from, each tableau performed the various dances the applause was.un-' stinted. - The choruses were heartily sung, and the dances were^most^artiß-, tically and gracefully performed. One of the prettiest scenes was that of "England," and the • dancing "of the . : sailor's hornpipe by Annie and Emily i Sullivan, Lucy Shanly, and May Cross, fairly brought down the house., . The following took part in the other dances:— lrish Jig— Mary Maskell, Dora, Tait, Nolly O'Neill,, and -Florence Murphy. Highland Fling — Emily Gibbons, Lilly Dalziell, Ella O'Reilly, and: , Trixie Wiltie. Cacnuca— Eileen arid Queenie Perrett, Daisy Carlton, Lilly ■ Dwyer, and Mary Mahoney. Club exer- , cise — Kathleen and "Vera Galpin, and ; Lilly Dalaell. Iris Drill— Ruby Perrett, Lena Wright, Ada Dalziell, Amy Hyde, Ella O'Reilly, Myrtle' Richardson, and ! Katie QuiUinane.- The "Good-Night Drill," by eight sweet little dots—Ade- , lame Dixon, "Clara ■ Mahoney/ Grace Chapman, Mary Cullinane; Katie and } Lexie Hatrick; Ivy Oldberg,-and Minnie Jefferson — was another 'pretty- and novel item, tho performance of which was warmly applauded. :The tableaux 'were effectively shown with' limelight effects, and the dresses were -most appropriate to the occasion. The 'characters in the play were, also well maintained.. We _must_ not .omit to mention that a capable Orchestra, under the leadership of Mr J. L.-> Beck rendered valuable assistance during the ( evening. In concluding orir note of the entertainment we must heartily congratulate the Sisters on its distinct success, for they must have taken a. lot of pains to train the pupils to such a high state of proficiency. We must also add a word of praise for the -excellent despatch 'with which, the items on the programme were proceeed with, and in this , connection many professional companies, whose performances include' tableaux, c'onld learn a -lesson.
