A WOOLLEN FACTORY.

TO THS £DXTOB«

Sir, — I trust you will be good enough, with your usual editorial courtesy, to grant me a small space" in your valu-able-paper to congratulate Mr J. G. Browne ton his very able and businesslike letter which appeared in your paper on the 17th, with reference to the erecting of a woollen factory in Wanganui. As you are doubtless aware, sir, Wanganui is practically a sheep-growing and wool-producing centre, and that the future prosperity of the town depends ■to -a -large -extent upon -the -spending capability of the farmers. When we take into serious consideration that the" colony is losing, ki round numbers, -about' £2,000,000 a .year through the low price ruling- at Home for* wool, it behoves us, and all those who have the interest of their country at heart, to endeavour to make some efforts to rectify this financial calamity. There are very few parts of New Zealand so well situated as Wanganui for the c&rrying on to a successful issue this important industry. I trust, Sir, that at no distant date some of our leading merchants and settlers will call a meeting, so. that this important question may be thoroughly discussed and ventilated. I notice that at the hut' annual meeting of the shareholders of the Mosgiel Woollen "Company; a dividend of 6 per cent. waa paid, and that this us. only the second year that the divjdeWU has been 'below 8 percent., clearly proving that, as an investment one is sure of a good return for money so spent. Thanking you in anticipation. — I am, etc., GEO. G. SUTHERLAND. -
