A .RAILWAY WITHOUT A CURVE
Fop 46 Miles.
The Khartoum line leaves Wodi Haifa and goes in a south-easterly direction through the Nubian Desert to Aba Hamcd, which is 250 miles from Wadi Haifa. The whole of this 'part of the country is a" flat sandy desert; occasionally a few hills are seen, but they seldom exceed 300 ft in height, and most of them ore only from 80ft to 100 ft above the surrounding country (says Engineering) may be gathered from the fact that it was possible to lay a line 45 miles long without a single curve in it, and without any cuttings or embankments worthy of name. It very rarely rains at all in this part of the desert, and -when, it does, very little seems to fall at a time. There are no streams or surface water of any sort. Water was found in two places between Wadi Haifa and Abu Hamed by sinking wells; one place was 77 miles from Wadi Haifa, and the other was 126 miles from Haifa. Water was found at the former place at a depth of .72ft, and at the latter place at a depth of 96ft. Several other places have been tried, but so far no water has been found. •
