Riccarton Training Notes.
CHRISTCHURCH, October 29. A good number of spectators were present on the course this morning to witness the doings of the Cup candidates aud other horses. They were awarded for breaking their night's rest by some very interesting gallopiug. The morning was fine, but « strong northerly breeze prevailed. The grass track was almost entirely used. This was very hard through lack of rain. Cutts' ■ team — Glenogle, Somerled, Cannic duel, Glenaladale, and Windwhistle, were given half to three-quar-ter pace 'work. , - Palaver, alone, galloped a mile and a half in a pleasing manner, the last round taking 2min 35secs. With a companion, Palaver ■ would have considerably, improved upon this, for she was' moving freely,- and her lust mile was run in lmin aOseca.
Djin Djin was restricted to long half pace work. _ Fulmen, with the best of weights, had a bout with Huku over a mile and a -half; full distance 2rain 41secs, first half milo 53, six furlongs 'lmin 20sccs, last half 53. The Cup horse gave the best exhibition so far. He was in tho lead all the way and ran away from Huku at the finish, pulling up 'fresh. , Sirius, Ideal, Canteen, and Military were companions over a mile, and a half. The former led at the first, but after a mile Military and Canteen went to the front and remained there, while Ideal was beaten off the first half mile in 53secs, mile lmin 51secs, full distance Sinin 42}ecca. Military did well, so did Canteen, both going comfortably dt the finish. Ideal had much the worst of the weights. - • Will-o'-the-Wisp was too good for Peerage and Calibre over a mile and a half, run ia 2min 42Jsecs*, the first milo and a- quarter in 2min 17secs. Kaltuwai, by herself, got over a mile and ■ in good style, the last mile taking lmin 15aoca. ■ Battleaxe was given strong > pacing in a mile and a half. Melwood rai six furlongs in lmin 18 sees. The Stf. Leger colt -is very well, but is rot .estimated N highly, for tho Cup. » Blazer beat Jabber comfortably ovor six furlongs in lmin 18 3-ssecs. Pampero went seven futlongs fast. Cherrystone badly beat Reliance and Paphos, the last mile of which was run in 54jecs. " Oknari was on thfc course for a short time, but was not worked. She appears very lame, and ia not very likely to start at the meeting, certainly not the first day. After breakfast tho course proper was open to two-year-olds. Heroism, Ascension, Rajah, De Mnrska, Gold Purse, Bombardo, Greek Maid, Lyon-es-je, Stepdancer, Firebrand, Golden Vein, Dirk, Terulet, Attention, Helen Faucett, Orloff, King's Stock, Imnerator, and the -Lakeshell— Ponsettia colt took part in sprints over, half a mile from the barrier starts.- Peckmaid, Ascension, Gold Purse, and Rajah were most prominent of the first ten. When Cutts worked. Dirk and' Golden Vein were the beat of the Yaldhurst lot. Qrlorffi and Helen Faucett showed the'besfform of many oj;her horses «ut doing useful exercise-.
