RACING CONFERENCE.

WELLINGTON, July 19. Mr Bidwill, for the Wnirarnpa country clubs, moved that when an official calendar is fixed by the Conference the scale of charges for advertising should be fixed by arrangement between the Conference and the publishers of the official calendar. He stated '>.hat tho Wairarapa country clubs felt that tho oharges were excessive and out of proportion to the benefits r»ceived. The chairman stated that tho Referee was appointed for ono year. It was for

the Conference to make any fresh ar rangements. Mr Samuel recognised tha services of rbe official calendar. There was throughout tho North Island a strong feeling that the clubs djd not receive a beneficial return from the Referee. The North Island clubs were obliged to advertise in their own papers as well. Mr McLean said the proposal to issue their own calendar \va9 a good one. Ho recommended that the chairman interview the proprietors of the Refereo and endeavour to get their J charges altered. This recommendation / was adopted, except .that the official enlen'dar be issued as usual. Mr Greon (Otago country clubs) moved that the question of country delegates' expenses be decided by the Conference. » It was agreed ° that metropolitan - clubs can collect expenses end refuse to pas 3 any programme, till they are paid. Tho committee appointed to consider the question of gentlemen riders' fees drew up the following proposal: — "That the feo for licensed gentlemen riders be £1, that the fees received be' voted as a welter flat race for gentlemen riders only at winter meetings of metropolitan clubs." This was agreed to. Mr Baldwin's resolution in favour of instituting class handicaps was withdrawn. The' same gentleman's resolution -for appointing stipendiary stewards led to a long discussionMost of the delegates who spoke were in favour of the proposal, though some questioned whether suitable men could be found, and others thought the expense would be too great. It was finally agreed that the committee appointed to consider the distribution of the Jockeys' and Trainers' Fund- should go into the proposal with Mr Baldwin. Mr Elliott was granted fifty guineas in connection with his claim re preparing stud book. .The committee appointed to consider tlie conditions of the Auckland Racing Club's Century. Stakes reported that in ; their opinion tho advertisement in th;e book programme of the Auckland Racing Club under rule 32a must be considered void, but .that the, advertisement in the official calendar must be regarded as consitiuting a contract between the club and owners entering horses. Under the circumstances the committee unanimously consider that the proper allowance to geldings in the Century Stakes of 1902 will be Slba. The report was adopted. In connection with pony racing, tho .chairman said that from the remarks of Sir Joseph Ward it, was obvious tho,t something must be done to meet the difficulty which had arisen. They had permitted trotting at flat race meetings, and must consider th? question Of pony racing at trotting meetingj. r It was resolved that the Conference, to remove tho difficulty existing in relation to pony racing in trotting programmes, recommends remission of their own motion by metropolitan clubs of all dis-qualifications-which may bo incurred in relation thereto, always provided that tho races are 'run under the Rules of Racing, that not more than two races bo included in. any. day's racing, and that programmes arc submitted for the approval of the metropolitan .club in the same way that trotting races in | racing programmes are subjected to the approval of trotting authorities. -The committee appointed to consider/ the question of- dates and permits re-, ported "as follows: — That,' taking 'the official - lists supplied,' they- recommend that tlie number of permits in ther respective' metropolitan districts be tlia same* as last year. The applications of the Waikouaiti Racing Club, Waiapu Racine Club, Wavprley-Waitotara Racing Club, and Winton Racing Club were not granted. Extra permits apnlied for by thf Avondale, Poxton and Wairarapa Racing Clubs were not granted. If permits arc available the committee recommend thai they he granted m the following order: Wavcr-ley-Woitotara, Cheviot, Avondale, and Wairarapa. All applications for registration were granted excepting the Greytown Racing and Trotting Cl*bs. The dates submitted to the Conference were approvad, with the following exceptions: — Dunedin Jockey Club granted November 38 and 30 or December 26 and 28 for Spring Meeting ;'Palmberston South Racing Club granted Januniy Ist; Te Aroha Jockoy Cub, February 16. and 17; Dunedin i Jockey Club, May 21 and 24; Egmortt Racing Club, May 7 and 8; Nnpicr Park Club. July 2 and 4; the Wostland and Southland Racing Clubs wero asked to select dates, to be approved by the chairman. " On the motion of Mr Samuel, seconded by Mr Friedlander, Sir George' Clifford was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. Several delegates paid high compliments to the chairman for the admirable manner in which he had fillsd the position. " This concluded the business of the Conference. • •
