THE PAINTERS' UNION.

' ■ ♦ TO THB BDITOB. ' Sir,— One rumour hath it, "The paintors'havo gone out on strike"; another, "One employer has dismissed all his men because they had joined tho Painters' Union." I emphatically deny both assertions. Tracing the lastnamed rumour to its source, it is found to have emanated from a rival firm for the purpose of— l was going to say, intimidatingr-influencing some of his omployeea from joining the Society. If you will allow me, I -will state our position, and leave tho verdict in tho hands of your readers. One February Ist of this-year we found it neces3ary to form a Union, and on the ieth of the *atne-month gave notice to all employers that wo required a rise in wages and other small. alterations. -and asking- them by what- date all contracts then entered into by them would be completed, as we did not want to embarrass them in any way. Only one firm had the courtesy to comply. , Another letter was sent Bskinsr for n roply in a fortnight. This brought two other replies, all of them absolutely refusing to entertain nnv of our requests. We found that by the Act of 1900 we could make application to the Arbitration Board to come under an award made in Wellington on July 10th; 1899.' As this award was to expire .on July 14th this year, our Society thought it bettor to wait until then, and join with the other Unions throughout the Wellington Industrial District for an award suitable for the whole district. The case comes before , the Conciliation Board at Wellington this week, and the following Unions are federated for one award: — Wellington, Napier. Masterton, Palmerston North, and Wnngrnnui. Throughout the dispute the consideration of the employers has been the main object with our Society; and see1 ing that over fivo months have expired ' since wo approached them, the charge ' of being hasty or acting arbitrarily can- '■ not bo laid to our door. — I am, etc., H. M. WILLIAMS. I Secretary Wanganui Society of Painters p , and Decorajorg 1 Jnfjustrial Uniqn of j ■ Workers. ' «
