QUOITING.

The postponed match between CaatlecliJE and the Caledonians came off on Saturday last on Rotunda Park. The previous heavy rains made" the heads a bit sloppy and the sky overhead was somewhat 'threatening. However, 3 rounds were played, resulting in a win for the gamesome Caledonians by 19, 22, and 10, or a total of 51 points. Tho gallant Brigade - from Castlecliff under Captain. Neill, consisted of nine stalwarts, but owing to illness and absence from home, the Caledonians could c-nly muster six. However, ' they gave a. good account of themselves, and it is liopc/l that when next nine Caledonian braves 'encounter their foes at Castlecliff three weeks hence their victory will be even more decided. Some of the outstanding features of the match were these — dead earnestness in play, with a lot of good-humoured "chaff" among the players — no display of illtemper or looseness in speech, and no soreness over defeat was manifested, though doubtless felt. Play on the whole was good and "ringers" frequent. We coald hear of Sa'thcrley putting on S ringers in one game, of Ruscoe with 4, of Murphy with 3, of Thomson with 3 successive "ringers" in 3 heads, and a good second, and of Infield's record of 63 points against- his three opponents' score of 17 — all of them being good men. It is, unfortunate that 'the scorers did not mark all the "ringers" on their cards. The two ,. captains, , Thomson and Neill, 'came against each other in tho -third round, and after aj long wrestling bout the .former came short' by a few points, though the finish should have been even closer than it was. Credit must be given to Captain Neill for a very clever shot. It came about as follows — the players stood Neill 18, Thomson 14, Thomson gained 2 nt lire upper end, making 16. His first quoit then lit an inch in front of the ptn, Neill's four inches over. Thomson's second quoit fell a ringer but tilted up slightly, just allowing & slight opening between his two quoits. Into this breach Neill's second quoit found' its way,, and not only dispossessed Thomson of a "ringer," but took/ his place, counted a "ringer," 'and so thtt game stood 20 to 16, instead of 19 to 18. However, the general will wrest the victory when next they meet. One other little episode of the last match at Castlecuff, should not pass unrecorded. Captain < Neill had played a. .rather neat shot when a shrill-voiced precocious youngster piped out — "I say. Marc, yer'll hey to get that putt in the; pa-o-pera" — and sho into the pa-a-pers it goto — a tenner to his credit. Only hemust not get too vauaty, for "pride goetft before a fall." Subjoined, are the individual scores:—- Ist Sound—Thomson (Caledonians) 21 v Ruscoe (Castlecliff) 16, Satherley 21 v Neill 15, Infiold 21 v Doran 6, Clarke 20 v F.
