MAJOR FOX'S ADDRESS.

(Per United Press Association.) ROTORUA, June 17. Major Fox, in presenting the Arawa's canoe to the Dnko, said:— "Welcome ! Welcome ! Welcome ! You have come hither from your illustrious father to bring- the love of your grandmother to us come to New Zealand to see the Maori people. My grandson, I pnesent you now with the model of" the canoe in which our ancestors came from distant Hawaiihi. It is named Arawa, after our people. I beg you to accept it, and place it in your ancestral halls. Tho dancing' of the women was. a charming feature in the demonstration. Aiie women wore beautiful costumes of red and white with coloured saahes," and their chants were remarkably melodious. They wept through the ovolnt'ons in a way which evoked ringing cheers' from- the onlookers and applauss from the Ducal party. The Duke and Duchess left the stand, and walked down the lines of the Maoris and received another ovation.

Some of the women were hideously painted, and those who took part in the hakns were as ferocious looking as the men.

The Ngapuhi and Arawa first apSroached the stand, and their perfect rill was loudly applauded from the Ducal stand.-*

Many of the presents made were extremely handsome and valuable and some we're' unique.

AUCKLAND, June 1?.

Before five o'clock yesterday morning, the wharf near the Ophir .was crowded with sightseers to witness tho departure of the Royal visitors. At five o'clock all was bustle on. board the Ophir, allthe officers and crew being at their various stations, and In a few moments the Royal yacht was clear of the wharf. The crowd gave the party a hearty cheer as the Ophir le'fr. Proceeding slowly down the harbour she 'was joined by the escorting warships, one On cither side, and a few minutes before six the three* ships had disappeared round North Head making a splendid sight in the dark of the early morning, all being ablaze with electric lights.
