The five thoroughbred horses which were purchased in England by Mr Gilruth for the New Zealand Government, were to arrive in Wellington toy the Papauui to-day. Ono of them (says the Post)' is Serapion, by Marcion, out of Lily of Lumloy. Ho is a six-year-old bay, stands 15 hands 2iu, and lias won. a number of steeplechases, one of them with 12.10' up. Lord Durham was at ono time the owner bf another of the quintet — Lupin, by Peter Flower out of .Lunette, also a six-year-old. He stands 15 hands 3in. The other horses arc — Tyranny, by Beauclerc, out of Queen of tho Isles, aged, about 15 hands 2{iS, light bay, a good nuggoty animal; Malachi, by Kilmarton, out of Vesta, by Hermit, six-year-old, a strong weight-carrier, having won with about 11.10; Amari, a four-year-old. In the big hurdlo race at Auckland last Monday, Coeur de Lion made a faulty jump in. negotiating tho lnst obstacle, and •his rider was nearly unseated. For a few seconds it seemed as though- the son of Dreadnought had extinguished what was a good winning chance, but Moore, making a wonderful rocovory, got back into the saddle, and, setting to work on his horso, Coeur de Lion straightened himself quickly, and, answering most gamely, ho had his race won thirty yards from tho post, eventually getting home by a couple of lengths. A speciat meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club stewards was held on Thursday night last to give Mr MoGinnis an opportunity of giving au explanation of his connection with the mare Vanilla. Mr McGinnis was disqualified for six months. Evidence wns a;iven by Mr H. Goodman, L. King, K. Dorrett, nnd Tripp (tho trainer of thi> mare). The evidence tendered was of a somewhat contradictory nature (writes "Dead-beat" in tho Otago Times). The evidence of a man who baa had his horse taken from him without warning, should be well- weighed nnd considered before acting on it. Ths taking away of a horse from, a trainer in such a manner is not calculated to improve tho sociability that might exist between the loser and receiver of the horse. The telegram put in as evidence as to Tripp's trustiworthiness .was, I prc~ sutne, from Mr Reid, of Ellcralie. McGinnis bad at the time of his disqualification what was probably tho most promising team of horses that had ever been trained by -ono man in Otago, no less than threp New Zealand Cup candidates occupying boxej at his stable., These are Pampero, Canteen, and Billet' Deiix. In addition to several other useful handicap horses, a number of youngsters of first-claas breeding and appearance were also in his charge. The Projectile colt and a gelding from Huguenot in particular aro greatly admired by all who have seen them. McGinnis had in all 15 horses in work, so that^by bis disqualification he will bo a big 'oeor from ti monetary point of view.
