ARRIVAL AT DUNEDIN.

DUNEDIN, February 5. Although it was known that the'lmperial troops were not likely to arrive before 11 o'clock, enormous crowds gathered in the Triangle in front'' of the railway station as early as 7 o'clock. The Volunteers mustered at about 8 o'clock, but beyond this the crowd had to furnish their own amusement. ; . . * ' Lat*r. * The ' Imperial troops after leaving Invercargill stopped at Gore for • one hour, when they were' marched to the Show Ground, 'whero they were entertained at luncheon, being- met by the Mayor and Mr McNab, M.H.R. The troops were enthusiastically cheered. At Clinton, /where a five minutes' stay waa made, the, crowd gave an enthusiastic reception. At Balclutha, where a fifteen minutes' stay was made, an equally cordial reception was given by a larger crowd. At Milton a stay of an hour was made, and here a supper of a high order was prepared for the men in St. George's Hall, , while the officers were entertained at Coomb's Hotel, the Mayor welcoming them. Colonel Wyndham responded _*pr them. At every station on the who» line of j rorito a ciiowd , collected and cheered the train as it .passed. The, first train reached Dunedin at 10.45, having made the run in five hours. Here a tremendous crowd gathered in the Triangle, and the scene was of a most enthusiastio nature, %and the sea of faces,, lit, up by the flaring lights, presented a weird but effective sis;ht. The men disembarked from the train" amidst tremeiidbus cheering 1 , and were drawn. -up, in' the Triangle. Here they Trere told oKF in sections, each' of which was accompanied by a number of Volunteers and men, and were marched 'off to a particular rendezvous appointed. At 'each rendezvous' those who had agreed .to take -the men were waiting, and the soldiers were at once taken to "-'the houses where they were to be the guests. The arrangements appear to work satisfactorily. Colonel Wyndham and his officers and men are delighted with the reception accorded them and the manner in which they have been treated.
