WANGANUI'S SPECIAL CONTINGENT.
A meeting of the local executive committee of the "More Men" Fiind was held jcbtcrday afternoon, tho Major presiding. Tho Mayor read a list of names of tlmso who had volunteered. The. Rev. G. Bond handed in the sum of ,£2l 2s Gd, proceeds of tho patriotic religious service, held on Sunday hist. Mr \. Burnett 1 cported with regard to the Tordell branch that tho committee had met and divided tho district into sub-divisions, for the purpose ot canvassing. The district was not a large one, but. they expected to raise between .6125 and .£l5O. Alicady they had collcctpd 11s. The Mayor received the following letter yesterday. — Ovcrton, Marton, Jan. 22, 19uO. Daar Sir,— Some tima ago you sent me a circular asking for subscription towards sending the second Contingent to South Africa. I think that Contingent ought to have beou sent at the expense of the colony, and I understood fiom Mr Seddon that the intention of \\\o Government wiuthat it should be s«. Now that the second Contingent has left, 1 can quite understand that flic Government may have ii difficulty in sending mom men without tho consent of Parliament, and I am quite willing to subscribe to the fund for tho purpose.
