The Generals acting under General Buller have echeloned, compelling the Boers to subdivide their forces. General llilyard is seeking to halve tho enemy, and tho preventing of their retreat Bouthwardft through passes in tho Draltenburg Mountains is already assuied. Gencial Duller is endeavouring to so duve tho Boera as to enable General Whito to assail their left flank from Ladyßmith. General Buller's brigades arc slowly and surely converging on tho Boei contre. General Warren is cautiously and steadily enveloping the enemy's right dank, pushing north-east. Tho British casualties on Sunday were under 100. Further reinforcements have reached General Buller. Tho infantry of the Ladysmith rahef column, sheltered by boulders, are on a prominent ridge, and can Cre across a thousand yards' flat to the Boers' main stronghold. The Artillery has Howitzers playing on tho trenches along several miles at kopjes. THE MODDER RIVER. hector McDonald commands highland brigade. Received January 24, 1.55 a.m. CAPETOWN, January 23. Hector Mac Donald, of Soudan fame, has succeeded General Wauchopo (who was killed in a recent battle), in tho command of the Highland Brigade at Modder River. RELEASE OF CAPTURED STEAMEB DURBAN, Januaiy 23. The Marie, seized at Delagoa Bay, has been released. DIVISION OF BOER FORCES THREATENED. Received January 24, 9.20 a.m. DURBAN, January 23. General Hilyard thientens to act as shears and cut the Boer forces in two.
