GUARDING THE RAILWAYS.
The army of men employed to watch tiio lino from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, via De Aar and Naauwpaart, is a --striking indication of the care that has to be taken to protect railway communication throughout Cape Colony (6ttyd a Router's message). This route is covered by 840 wiles of railway. At every quarter of a milo a Kaffir is ptatioiied with two flags. Three men, working in turn, watch each point, so that 10,080 men are required for this one line.
