The Uniteds won the toss and went to the wickets, J. C. Martin and Beaven opening to Delves and Taylor., Each batsznan scored a boundary and four byes were run, and then ' Beaten -was nicely taken by Delves in the slips. Walker filled the vacancy, but immediately lost Martin, who was bowled by Delves. Watty came next, and avenged tho loss of Martin's wicket by hitting the next three balls from Delves to the boundary. This brought on Lewis in the place of Delves, and the score was taken to 31, when Watty miabiti Taylqr, and Armstrong took the catch, letting in A. Martin. Hogg now replaced I»pwis, and Walker, who was apparently much out of form, mishit his third ball to K. H. Cave aid retired. W. Luxford joined A. Martin. The latter was scoring freely , and 67 appeared before Hogg beat W. Luxford, and L. Luxford, took his brother's place. A. Martin continued to play well, and 11 more runs were added before L. Luxford was retired by Taylor. Harrison, the next man, soon put on 11, including two boundaries, and then Taylor secured his wicket. Martin soon after was beaten by Hogg, with the score at 96. The outgoing oatamen played a fine, vigorous ' innings, his BCore of 38 including six boundaries. The last two batsmen carried (he score to 122 by hard hitting, Simpson especially laying on the wood, and scoring the first six of the match. He quickly put on 17, and then gave a chance which was accepted. Tho Britannias opened with P. Lewis and A. O. Cave, Harrißon and Watty bowling. .Lewis soon got to work, and thrice hit Harrison to the fence in the first over. Watty bowled a maiden, lewis again got on to Harrison, and hit his first ball for 2 and his third ball right out of the ground for 6, bringing 20 up. The bowler had his revenge, and bcattered Lewis' stumps next ball. K. H. Cave came in, and his brother got two boundaries off Watty's next over, but Boon after tipped one into Luxford's hands. Two for 28. C. Pownall joined , K. H. Cave, and a good partnership resulted, both playing cautiously at the §pod balls and banging the loose ones, otwithstanding several changes of bowling, the score mounted, and the board showed 59 up before K. H. Cavo skied one from Harrison and Simpson took the catch. Taylor and Armstrong did not remain long, and five wickets were down for 69. Then another good stand wae made by Bullock and Pownall, and 91 appeared before Martin beat Pownall. , This yoiuig batsman played a most commendable innings, and should develop into' a good batsman. W. Gordon joined Bullock, and both indulged in some good hitting, carrying the score to 114 before a, couple of catches off Watty's bowling disposed of both. The end came at 119— three behind'their opponents' score. With three-quarters of an hour to time, Watty and J. C. Martin commenced the second innings of the ' •TTniteds, Taylor and Gordon having charge of the attack. Thre wickets were -quiokly down— J. C. -Martin, Beaven, and A.
