RAILWAY SICK BENEFIT SOCIETY

The thirteenth annual general meeting of the Napier-Taranaki-Manawatu Railway Sick Benefit Society was held at tho Aramoho Hotel on Friday evening, Mr Hayden presiding. There was a good attendance, and a number of apologies were received.

The annual report attributed the great progress mado by the Society to be due to the honorary colleotors and sick visitors, who had been unremitting in their efforts un behalf of the Society and ita members. The sick visitors had made 390 visits during the year. The committee wished to thank the gentlemen at tho head of tho various departments who had given valuable assistance in carryings on the Society's work, which extends over 300 miles of railway. Two fatal ac"cidents have occurred, by which the Society has lost two young and popular members in the execution of their duty. "With their usual generosity railway mem. 'have contributed the sum of .£290 19s for the widows and orphans left unprovided for. Three gentlemen are paying to the Railway Benevolent Fund, and others are kindly invited to assist, as the committee have appeals for assistance from two members, who have been laid aside by sickness and accident over six monthß. Contributions to this fund for honorary members are from 10s 6d to 21s per annum. The attention of the meeting was called to Mr H. Holmes, who was suffering from the effects of a severo accident received at JEJastown Workshops. Mrs Holmes was dlso lying dangerously ill. The secretary was instructed. to convey to Mr Holmes the sincere and heartfelt sympathy of his fellow-workmen assembled at this meeting in his sorrow and Buffering, and thoy trust that strength may be given him in his sad surroundings. A vote of thanks was tendered to the Society's Honorary Collectors, Sick Visitors and Management Committee. The half-yearly balance-sheet was read as follows : Contributions, entrance fees, etc., ,£276 15s; expenditure-, , sick and accident benefit paid, £236 13s 9d; funeral allowance, £20; annual dividend of 3s to members and management expenses, £7& 13s 8d; carried forward, £140 16s Id; members enrolled during the year, 72; 'received on transfer, 9; transferred to affiliated societies, 17; deceased, 3; income from all sources for the year, £517 19s.

Tho eleotion of officers to serve the Society for tho year 1900 resulted as follows: — President, Mr Hayden; VicePi epidont, Mr Bowles; Secretary, Mr Pepper; Treasurer, Mr Liddle; Auditors, Messrs Cronin and Sigley; Trustees, Messrs Bartlett and Robertson; Ci.mmittee, Messrs Allan, Summerliayea, Symos, Fraser, Cole, Watkhw, and Galvm.
