WANGANUI REGATTA ASSOCIATION

THE ANNUAL MEETING.

Tliero was a lprge and representative attendance at the adjourned annual meeting of the Wanfranui Regatta As sociation held last evening at Poster's Hotel, Mr C. V. Powell presiding. After the minutes of the last annual meeting wore read and confirmed THE ANNUAL REPORT was read as follows : — Mr Chairman and Gentlemen, In submitting my report for the year 1899, I have to report that the regatta was, on tho whole, a success, although tho weather in tho forenoon made it look like a postponement,, as a perfect gale was blowing, accompanied by rain showers. However, by the time the first raco was advertised to start, the weather had calmed down, and five boats faced llio starter for the Maiden Raco, the first ovonfr— two Wellington clubs and threo local clubs. This race was won by the Stars after a good fight with Aramoho for second place. The next event was the Senior Fours, in be6t boats, which also proved a very exciting oontest, and went to tho orcdit of our local senior club, but if tho flag boat had been in its plaoe the Unions would have had a much bigger say for tho honourable position of number one. Bad steering, there is no doubt, put this tough little crew right out of it. Tho two Junior races were just about as well contested events as wo have seen at any prevous regatta. The one (in clinkers) was won by the Wellington hoops, and the other by the Wellington maroon and whites. The Wanganui Rowing Club Collegiate Raco this year again caused considerable interest, and eventuated in a good win for the School through tho careful coaelung of Mr Orford. The last raco on the programmo proved as exciting as any of the day, although the Wellington Rowing Club scratched for the OTCiit. It was a lair "ding-dong" all the way between tho Wanganui R.C. and Aramoho, eventually being won by a length by the black and red. The entries

' were up to tho usual standard, and included our regular visitors, the Wellington Stars, and Wellington Rowing Clubs. Thi total amount of prize money given was j674, out of which sum was kept at home, and the balance was divided thus between tho two Wellington clubs : Stars J617, and Wellington .£lO. The Wanganui Rowing Club took the lion's share, viz., ,£29, Aramoho ,£ll, and Uniond M.7. Referring to the balance sheet, it will bo noticed with regret that your reserve has had to be tapped to tho amount of .£9 odd. This is attributable to some of your canvassers not having Eerformed their duties so well as might aye been expected, as this year only .£54. lla 6d was collected, as against £ 68 9s the previous year, and larger amounts other years. It will also be. observed that your expenditure wna less this year than, last year by nearly £o, although you have been put to the expense of having the championship course photoglaphed for tile purpose of advertising the same through circulation of the programme. I may hero mention, gentlemen, that I had this photograph reproduced in tho Canterbury Times, Press, Spoking Review, and N.Z. Graphic, thinking it would enhance the chance of tho -next championship regatta boing held on the Wanganui River; but this, of course, is not to be. In conclusion, I have to thank Mr Nofcman for his usual courtesy in again jl auditing tho balance sheet, which he has certified as being correct, and to place my resignation in your hands, as I find tho duties (although light) interfere with 1 other appointments. T. W. FERRY, Secretary. The report, after discussion, was adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. ." The result of tho election of officers ,- w^. as follows: — President, Mr C. V. (re-elected) ; Vive-Presidents, S»essrs J. Bates, W. H. G. Foster, T. D. and H. A. Lomax; Starter, Mr " (1 F. Atkins (re-elected) ; Assistant Starter, Mr E. Hackett; Umpire and Referee, Mr G. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the retiring secretary mid treasurer (Mr T," W. Ferry), for the valuable services rendered the Association during his Ihrco years' term of office.
