NOTES BY "PAKEHA."

Amongst tho horßes training on the local tracks, Mr Fitzinaurice's Cup canIdalo, Rubin, is doing really good work, also Bugler; whilst Waiwera ia not only acquitting himself favourably on tho ilat but is jumping well. Aquatic is also looking well, and takes very kindly to the fences when she is put ab them. Forager is another showing excellent promise. Woodley's team includes Watershofc, Somnolent, a sister to Tangahoe (Natator—Beauty Bright), and Man-o'-War. The chestnub sister to Tangahoe evidently knows how to gallop, and it should not be long ere Woodley wins a raco with her.

Mr W. Ryan's gelding Tangahoe is a greatly improved horse, under the care of F. Reid, and is jumping like a deer. Collello's team — The Hempio and Lighting — are amongst the improved division, especially the former, who is in blooming health. Lightning will probably bo seen out at Marton. Collello will, have hard luck with The Hempie if he does not score more than once this spring with tho daughter of Natator and Romp, as she is rapidly striking form.

Southerly Buster, under J. Bennett's cave, is domg nice half-pace work, and it would not take much time or trouble to get him ready for racing. Bennett has also a half-brother to Cyclone, by Ascot, who has tho makings of a good hurdle horse. Tho big fellow knows now to gallop. _ . R. Wheeler has Sundial in slow work, and a mare by Wapiti out of Olga. Olga is half-sister to Loch Lomond, and therefore her progeny should be able to raco. Tho filly has certainly wintered all right, and the trainer should win a raco with her before long. M'Cormick has a full sister to Fireworks, tho makings of a useful mare later on with a bit more condition than sho lias ju6t now. Butler has a two-year-old brown filly by Cuirassier — Yattaghan, who is engaged in' classic races, and has evidently been well taught tho rudiments of her eduqation, giving every promise of becoming a strong galloper. Mr T. S. Bristol's team includes Light, Whitney, and a three-year-old bay filly by Vanguard (a half-sister to Whitney and Liglit). Whitney is looking bright and well, and so also is Light, tho former doing strong work on the flat, and the latter jumping well. The filly is restricted to cantering at pre? sent.

Hotspur, who is now trained by Fitzgerald, is being schooled over hurdles, and the son of Sou-W ester and Graco Darling not only jumps well, but has a good tuni of foot. A. Lynch's team includes Silver Ray, a gray filly- by Vanguard — Waitotara (engaged in the Wanganui Guineas), and a bay gelding by Vanguard — Hiss Dolphin (half-brother to Silver Ray). Tho grey filly (half-sister to Ascotvale) knows how to gallop, and Silver Ray is one of the best-conditioned horses on the track. I would like to see Lynch win ono or two races with the pair to reward him for his trouble and patience. No local horses have wintered better than Mr O'Driscoll's Indian Shot, who is very forward. Voltigeur, who has been enjoying a lengthy spell, has been again taken up, and is an inmate of tho same stable.

T. Leeson's Handsome Jack filly seems to improve, and is doing nice steady work under Lceson's care.

Mr Coleman has two in work — Troubadour and Kai Iwi Lad. Tho former is looking fresh and well, and should win a raco or two ere long, but the latter is not so forward,- he having been on. tho sick-list.

J. Brooks has in work on the local track a three-year-old chestnub colt by Tho Workman— Q.E.D., and tho voungsler appears as if he required plenty of time to develop. Mr J. Paul's 'string (trained by D. Chapman) comprises Black Jacket, Vibration (engaged at Bulls), the two-year-old Perfection, the two-year-old by Westmere — Echo, and the two-year-old by Tho Workman— Leonessa. The quintette aro all looking well, and during tho past week, with several others, including the Handsome Jack filly, were put through their facings at the startin<*BJachine by Mr Chavannes, °

J. Belcher's New Zealand Cup candidate. Rose Plot, is ono of the handsomest hoiscs o;i the track. With a bit of btron<r work, Up should annex one or two races befoie he leaves ior Chrisleliurch. Sed^ebrook, i:,iotbpr inmate of the stable, is engaged af. Bulk. The chestnut is very much on the big side, and I think it is a pity to hurry him in his v>drk. Belcher has also Matarawa, who does not seem to improve much, and Punui, who docs not ahow pace at present. H. Alexander is training Mr Moore s p.iir Chasseur and SI. Lyra, both of them showing signs of getting into good condition. Stremia, in charge of J. Farrell, lookb well to the eyo, and should bo heard of to advantage shortly. I think the above includes all the horses working on the local tracks at present, who are in the different trainers' hands. The purebred Clydesdale colt Gle.ilivet is advertised to travel this season in Wanganui and surrounding district. Glenlivet is stoutly bred, having imjnenso power and substance, great quait<?rs and loins, flat bono of the best quality, abundance of hair of silky fmenc-s and is a symmetrical horse nil over, .i true typo of the breed he represents. He stands 16.2J, and in the show ring has demonstrated his superiority — compel ont judge 3 giving it as their opinion that ho is one ofthe most perfect Clydesdales bred in the colony. Particulars as to hi.-, pedigree aro given in another column, and anything further mny be obtained on application to Mo=srs Donald aud Co., Putiki, Wanganui. Under the auspices of the Wanganui A. and P. Association a parade of stud horses is to bo held on the afternoon of Wednesday, 20th September. By perusal of the advertisement it will be noticed that particulars should be with tho secretary (Mr E. N. Lifiiton) a week previous to the closing of entries (Saturday. 10th) . A sale by auction on the ground will bo held by Mr Liffiton after the parade.
