POST AND TELEGRAPH RETURNS.

« ■- The Post and Telegraph revenue for the - December quarter amounted to £109,758 , - an increase of £10,861 over the corres- ' ponding quarter of 1807. Of this, the - Postal receipts wore £68,110, and Tele,grph i£44,fl3D ( aa against £56,440 and ' £42,457, increases* £8679 and £dlB2 "rostieotlvelyi, , Stamps sold 1 , for postage ■ realised £59,501, an increase of £8721. . Paid telegranis numbered 712,121, of ' the value of £26,232, as against 643,801, of the value of £24 632 in December quarter, ' 1897, an increase of 68,320 telegrams and £1600 in amount." Of these, ordinary telegrams' numbered 687,553, of the value of £20,606, showing increases of 60,642 and £1622. Savings Banks deposits numbered 63,770 for £767,051, and withdrawals 54,643 for £798,658, an excess of withdrawals of ■ £31,607." In December quarter, 1807, tho deposits '.numbered 60,749 for £733,112 „ 'and •the withdrawals 49,583 for £741,861, an excess of withdrawals of £8749. The money orders issued numbered 85,848 for £264,455, as against 80,477 for £249,888 in December quarter, 1897 an • increase of 5371 in nuihber and £14,570 in amount. <J.'hd postal notes sold were, ■ 107,332 for £35,304, as compared with 101,702 for £33,957 in December quarter, ■> 1897, an increase of 5630 for £1347.
