OLD AGE PENSIONS.

-♦- — (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, January 16. The hearing of the pension claims began to day. At the outset a difficulty was revealed whioh threatens to injuriously affect a large proportion of the claims. Although the Act enjoins the Government servants to help claimants in every way, the Registrar-General does not read this to apply to his department, and refuses certificates without fee. Mr Kenny, S.M., said he had hoped this department would have been of great assistance, and recommended the applicants to bring the matter before Ministers. Up to luncheon only 16 claims had beeh heard,' and several of these were postponed for evidence as to age or character. In nearly every case there was a difficulty about proving age.
