THE name of Maxim ia known the world over, and the hearer of that name will he pretty generally credited with possessing sufficient mechanical knowledge to express on opinion which liko Jack Buueby's |'is a opinion." Mr Iliram S. Maxim has recently written a letter concerning certain tests of cycles, in which he says : — " Some two years ago there was a question about establishing a company ia England to manufacture a cycle to be called the Maxim cycle, the idea being to make, if possible, something superior to anything which was in tho market at the time. In order to find out what kind of cycles were tbe best, we purchased several of the best English and American makes. The&e were put in the hands o£ young English engineers, and subjected to very severe tests, being used on the road between our range at Eynesford and our weeks at Erith. These engineers very soon reported that the Columbia was the easiest tiding machine It was preferred to all others, and notwithstanding that it was ridden more than any of the other machines, it passed through the first year without any mishap. About thia time I myself commenced to ride, and after trying all of tho machines which we then had, I foiind that tho Columbia was unques tionably tho best. I weigh about ,15 Btonc 71b, and tun a very strong man, well calculated to test a bioycle, and I must admit that, overythiag considered, the .'Columbia has been the best machine that I havo ever tried so far. From the excellent character of these machines, and from tho increasing numbers that are being sold, I believe it will tako a great deal of trouble to keep them out of the English market. Many of my friends have purchased these machines on my recommendation, and they aro all highly pleased with them. The name of Iliram Maxim, the inventor of the famous Maxim gun, gives great woight to the above opinion and adds another proof that Columbias are Standard of the World. D.
