Admiral Sampson telegraphs that the bombardment completely silenced the guns at Santiago forts on Monday. The American vessels suffered no damage. At 7 o'clock in the morning, during a dense fog, the fleet in double order column sent a torrent of shells into the foris. The Brooklyn at a rango of 800 yards destroyed Estrella fort, while the smaller ■vessels swept the inshore batteries. The New York ana New Orleans followed, clearing Castro and burning the Catarena forts. The Spaniards abandoned tho cruising ship Meredey.
