, * I' The Republic Declines to Recognise Britain's Suzerainty.
(By Electric Telegraph — Copyright.) (Per United Press Association.) (Beceived May 25, at 10 a.m.) Pbetoma, May 23. The reply of the Transvaal Executive to the Hon. Joseph Chamberlain's despatchdeclines to recognise the suzerainty of Britain over the Transvaal since the convention of 1884, and maintains that the convention of 1881 is ineffective, and reaffirms the right of the Transvaal Government to proceed to arbitration in the matter of disputes with Britain. , Mr Fischer, an unofficial member of the Executive Council of the Orange 3 Free State, has deolined the appointment of Secretary of State for the Transvaal in succession to Dr Leyds.
