THE NEWMAN RAILWAY ACCIDENT
The Enquiry.
(Per United Press Association.) Ekm mioxa, February 18. The enquiry into the derailing of the train at Newman began this morning. Guard Jones said he signalled to the ganger to lock the points and thought he had done so. The train was late, and he was anxious to get to time by reaching Cartevton. He had been ill and weak with influenza, and only back to work on the morning of the accident. Ganger Gumaue said ho saw the guard signalling, but did not understand what he said. He saw liim point towards the block stops, and thought he meant to look the stop block. Later on he heard No- (i train whistling for bleaks. He ran out aud found the points unlocked. Witness denied that he hod promised to lock the points. Guard Jones might have said lock the points as well as stop blocks. ! Never knew the points block open before. ( Knew both stop blocks and points must bo open to allow the train to go out. He could not say why he attended to the blocks and not the points. He considered he was lacking in care in not looking at the points after locking the stop, and it was in oversight on his part. The points were working wel} on the day of the accident,
