THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.

Meeting of Sheep Farmers at Napier

(Per United Press Association)

Napibb, August 2.

There was a crowdod meeting of cheep farmers to-day, lasting over four hours, to hear addresses on the meat trade from Messrs D. J Nathan and W. Nelson.

After Mr Nathan had explained his schema Mr Nelson replied at great length. He contended that tho prppoaed schenja snd guarantee was quite unnecessary. He opposed the opening" of shops in the province?, maintaining that Eastman's and Nelaon and Son's thousand frozea meat shopa and the other two thousand butchers who sold frozen meat were better vehicles for distribution of meat. He denied that the low prices were dne to want of storage accommodation. In London alone four months' snpply could be stored, and there were many stores and provinces. He quoted detailed figures to show that the m»at was well distributed all over the provinces. He ridiculed the idea of a Smithiield ring, contending that if thore were a combination strong enough to regulate the prices it would not be confined to 4000 or 5000 tons of frozen mutton Bold every month while 20,000 tons of fresh meat were sold at high prices. The better price of NewZealand lamb was also quoted as negativing the idea of a ring. Ho' thoroughly agreed that a concentration combination in London wasf'the solfe solution of the present disorganised state of the market, but stated that it had now been affected under the new co-operative distributing CGmpany ■jusfc formed in London to deal with the -whole ot the consignments from

Australasia, * Mr Nathan, in answer, said that while Mr Nelson had condemned all his promises he was driven to the same conclusion.
