Bodies in River Beds .

The poorer olasies of Hindus in Bengal have a custom whioh the Bengal Government has at length determined to suppress. It consists of the throwing of dead bodies, into rivers and staking them in river-beds, the sole object being to aroid the expanse of burial. The Government has published a resolution calling upon commissioners to report upon these praotioes, and the opinion held by prominent Hindus with reference to them. Notes are also published showing the opinions of eminent Hindus as to the injunctions of Hindu law that the contamination of drinking water should be striotlv prohibited under severe penalties. In view of the faqt that Bengal depends almost entirely on its rivers for a pure water supply, the resolution is an admirable one in the interests of sanitation.
