Orton, in his confession, states that while in Sydney he stayed at and bought a metropolitan hotel in the name of Tiehborne, and offered bills in payment. He lived » fast life, borrowing money freely, and his name was announced, in the newspapers! Both Bogle and Guilfoyle visited him, and were recognised by him. He "pumped" the former daily, and trusted his memory as to the information thus obtained. Orton continues that Gibbes, the banker, raised .£IOO towards assisting him in farthering his claim to the Tiohborae estates, and that he than sailed for Panama en route to England. The passengers on the steamer included Mr Jamas Forrester Snllivan, the Victerian Minister for Bailways and Boada, whom he had known in Bendigo. In conversation he told that gentleman that he was returning to England to clahn his estates, and invited Mr Sullivan to pay him a visit.
