At the inquest on tha body of the infant Dorethy Edith Carter, found in the garden of larches, Winton, and with the murder of whom Minnie and Charles Dean arc oharged, tb» child irai traced from the hands of her grandmother (a Christchurch woman), who gave it toMni Dean, pasting «8 Mra Gray, at the Bias, going to Winton on the 30th wit., thence to Dipton en the 2nd inst. by train -with Mrs Dean. Tie child was in the carriage of the evening train to liumsden when the guard pawed through the flwt and aeoond time, bnt disappeared befora Lumsdon was reaohed, and at no subsequent time was it seen with her. The tin box which they carried was light at Diptoß, and *t Lumsden a 12 year old boy could scarcely carry, it, and it was heavy when they returned home on Saturday without the child bnt with her clothes and those «f a smaller baby in a parcel. The girl who went to meet lbs Dean at the train said that ate told her the box contained bulbs from a lady from Mataura, but this waß denied. The girl, by Mis Dsan's order, left the box all night in the rashes in a paddock and brought it to the house on Sunday. All the railway guards identified Mrs Dean, who is well known through frequent travelling, and a chemist at »he Blu*, who deposed selling laudanum to her on the 80th ult., when she sign«d the poißon book "M. Gray," the writing being identified as Mra Dunn's. The inquest will be continued tomorrow.
