THE CHRISTCHURCH HOSPITAL

Cwbistchbbch, April 7.

A public meeting in reference to the Hospital was held on Saturday night in the Oddfellows' Hall, which was densely crowded, about 800 being present. Mr J. Smith, M.H.R., presided. Addresses delivered by Mr Q, Russell, M.H.R., T. Taylor, Revs. H. Watson and E. Taylor. The following resolutions were carried unanimously amid enthusiasm :— (I) That this meeting record its emphatic protest against the action of the Hospital Board in dismissing Nurse Cameron without granting 1 her an opportunity of being heard to any charge that may have been made against her, and that in vie^v of the very serious charges against the Hospital management and the incomplete and unsatisfactory nature of Dr Macgregor's report, this meeting demands from the Government in the interests of the institution and ii justice to the employes concerned, a full public inquiry by an independent tribunal j (2) that having regard to the serious divergencies of opinion which have beon manifested from time to time between the general public and the managing bodies of several of ouv public institutions, and of the premise of tho Government to introduce the Local Government Bill, this meeting is of opinion that all bodies managing' public institutions or administering public funds should be elected by adult suffrage or by the ratepayers' Tote exercised directly ; (8) that this meeting congratulates Mr O. Gray and other memborq of tho Hospital Board who voted with him upon the firm stand they have taken in this matter in the public interests ; (4) that copies of these resolutions be forwarded to the Premier, the Hon. W. P. Beeves, and the Chairman of the Hospital Board. Cheers were given for Mr Gray and for Mr Brown and the wardsvnan, -whom the Board proposes to dismiss, and groans for the majority of the Board, .
