At Auckland on Saturday the 3rd inßt. tho fishing boat Maggie capsized off the North Head and one of the crew was drowned. The remainder reached shore safely, ono of tho number named John Cuomo being bravely rescued by two convicts working in the vicinity who swam out and kept the drowning man afloat until further assistance was at hand. At the inquest tho jury recommended that the conduot of tbo two convicts named McLean and Williamson should be recognised by the Government. Ministers have considered the matter and decided that she sentence of two ye^ra, passed on John McLean, at New Plymouth, in Oeiober, 1893, for horso stealing be reduced by six months. In the case of Edward Williamson, who received a sentence of 18 months at Napier, in Febru&ry, 18P3, for stoaling a horse, saddle, and bridle, ho will be loloaacd immediately. The lattet'a sentence would not expire before May. The Education Board have passed a resolution, unanimously, for a searching inquiry into the system of conducting standard and scholarship examinations. A Committee was appointed to take steps.
