The War Office refuses to grant Australians commissions in the Imperial Artillery Engineers until s Military College is established in Australia similar to that at Kingston, in Oanada, Lord Kimberloy is seriously ill. A Dalziel'a telegram reports that a bomb exploded ia a poor district in New York, shattering the tenement buildings. Several other bombs were found in the vioinity. The barque Alastor, from Lyttelton to London, whioh put into Valparaiso on August 3rd, to repair damage sustained in a heavy gale, and the barque Lady Elizabeth, from Lyttelton (September 7) have arrived. The eleotion for the vacant seat for Horncastle, caused by the death of the Hon. Edward Stanhope, took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Willoughbv Denesby (Conservative) by a majority of 138 votes over Mr Torr, the Home Rule candidate. The contest was most exciting. The Government is being urged to sell part of their Suez Osnal shares, and to devote the proceeds to the construction of additional warships. It is stated that differences have arisen among members of the Cabinet about the extent of increasing the navy. Antwebp, January 12. The Jesuit Collogo has been destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at a million francß. It is believed to be the work of an incendiary. Rome, January 12. Two thousand rifles and four hundred revolvers were seized at Palermo, the capital of Sicily. Several bomb explosions have occurred in various parts of the province of Ancona. The Premier has asked the Powers to prevent the Socialists in their domains from fomenting the revolt in Sicily. Reports are current of an intended rising in the -Romagna. A widespread importation of arms is going on. The Venetian press asßertß that Italy is arming on the frontier in readiness for war. Pabis, January 12. The jury in Vaillant's case debated for only half an hour before returning their verdict. The trial lasted six hours. Vaillant refuses to appeal against the sentence. He preserved his cynical demeanour all through and heard the sentence unmoved. When called upon to speak, he reiterated his regret at the small number of Deputies who were hurt by the exploeion. He read a long document abusing the moneyed claeaes, and _d,welt on the miseries of the masses, quoting Darwin and Herbert Spencer. The Palais de Justice bristldd with armed guards during tho hearing of the ease. Vaillant said he only desired to kill the Deputies, and selected the place whence he thought moat of them would be hurt. Tho bomb was not charged with bullets. The Roman Anarchists have secretly issued a manifesto inviting the troopß to join in the revolt. Tho garrison has been reinforced.
