WELLINGTON.
January 9. In the Magistrate's Court to-day, J. W. Morrison, tailor, was charged under the Faotorieo' Act with permitting his female employes to work after one o'clock on Saturday afternoon. The girls in question gavo evidence that they were working on piece work. For the defence it was contended that the Saturday half- holiday only applied to those on daily and weekly wages, aud not to piece workers. Counsel for the Inspector of Factories admitted this objection took him by surprise, and the case was adjourned until the 16th for further argument.
The poisoning of Bezar tiirn3 out not to be un accident. He took the rafc poison purposely in the hope that his father. SergeantMajor Bezar, of Wairarapa, Drill Instructor , recontly retrenched, might be enabled to draw the amount of hia life Dolicy. This was ascertained from letters he had written in anticipation of his death. The young man is vow out of danger.
The Ballance Memorial Committee have £450 net in hand, which will be invested in the Post Office Savings Bank till wanted. The Committee have decided to write to the Auckland and Wanganui Committees, asking them to amalgamate, fttr Moskell wrote, on behalf of tho University Senate, stating that tho Senate would be willing to undertake <ho trust if it waa desired to establish a scholarship, but tho money would not be sufficient to allow it to be competed for more than once in three years. It was decided to adhere to the original proposal and devote tbe surplus money only to the Scholarship Committee. It was determined to write for designs for the statute of a memorial not to cos 1 ; more than £500.
