WANGANUI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting ofthe above was held yesterday (Friday) maffag^ Present— Crs Sommerville (chair), Higgio^ Bamber, Patterson, Cowan, Howie, and Robertson. The bank book showed a debit balance of f 640 (less funds paid in that morning), and accounts to the amount of £485 13i Od were passed for payment. A communication was received from the Secretary of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, enclosing returns of patients discharged from the County for the quartet ending September 30tb, also showing the amount expended on charitable aid on account of Borough recipients for fche same period. Discussion having taken place as to whether any of those patients were in a position to pay for their maintenance, it was resolved that Messrs Qreonliill and McMahon be written to asking them to pay the balance due by them to the Hospital Board. Mother Joseph Aubert wrote stating that, owing principally to the exertions of a young chief, the obstruction of the road to Otaranoho had been removed. Mr 8. T. Fitzherbert's opinion in connect tion with the election of member* for tho Upper Wangaehu Biding was read, stating that as the neceessary steps had not been taken to increase the Board's leprenflntation, and two Councillors having been declared elected for the said Biding instead of as legally only one, there was, in reality, no legal representative of that Biding, and consequently an election would hare to be held to fill the extraordinary vacancy caused by the errors Ihe solicitor's opinion on Dr Grace* road was read, Bfter which the Chairman moved that the mattar be held in abeyance until Dr Grace's arrival, and ft Committee of the whole Council consult him on tho matter. The solicitor's opinion on tho damage dono to the Kaiwhaiko road was read, and was to the effect that tbe Council had no romedy against the Borough Counoil. It was decided that in future the la^je statutory holidays be given the Council's roadmen as to othor workmen. It was decided that an amount not exceeding £25 bo expended in gravelling tha Long Acre and Gordon Park roads. Or Higgie moved that the Chairman, and Ors Bamber, Kobinson, and the mover be a committee to go over the roads from Kauangaroa to Sarjeanf s upper boundary, and report as to the besfr'-means of expend* ing the Jd rate levied over the Upper Wangaehu rating district, with power to call for tenders, to he in at the next ordinary meeting.—Seconded by Cr Robinson and carried. Mr Mason waited on the Council to enforco hia complaint against the Road Board for not having expended monoy set aside for a certain purpose. The Chajrinan Etited that the Council had writtenUSe Soard on tho matter, but so far had received n» reply from them. The Council then adjourned.
