DUNEDIN.

June 1. At tho Supreme Court sittings here, George Clark for embezzling the funds of the Prince of Wales Lodge, Manchester Unity, received a sentenco of three years penal servitnto.

A barijuentiue, which passed the New Plymouth roadstead at 10 o'clock on Wednesday morning, sailed right between the Motoroa and Mikotahi islands, and at she went along the " St. Kilda " could be plainly read by persons standing ou the breakwater. The experiment of sailing between the islands (observes tho Taranaki Herald) is rather dangerous for a captain unacquainted with the locality to try, but the St. Kilda is under the command of Captain Kobertson, of s.s. Oreti fame, aud hence there was not much ground for fear on this occasion. In fact, very few people knew he was in command of this vessel, but whea they Baw her sail between the islands on Wednesday the general expression used waa " That's Robertson." With respect to to the formation of tip road from Pipiriki to Karioi, wbioli ifos mentioned by the deputation from* tbij) j Chamber of Commerce which waited on the Premier on Friday, we understand that plana were prepared for nine miles of the work at the Obakuno end , but that tenders were deferred being called for owing to the lateness of the season and the wet nature of the country at that end. Plans however will shortly be ready and tenders invited for tho formation of oight miles of the road nearest the Wanganui River, where the country is drier. It will be remembered that all the bridges on this road have been built some time and that it is only the formation and metalling which remains to bs done to make it fit for wheel traffic. It is to be hoped that this will be done at the earliest possible moment, so that the wool and produce from the Murimotu Plains Bl&y be brought to Wanganui next season-
