H. Whiting Mr J. Crane Mr H. Hurley Mr F. Stringer Mr Milk Mr J. Trussell Mr A. Sykes This Company is being formed for tho purpose of placing in Ihej Wangonui Markot, and the Districts available, regular supplies of fresh fish. It is intended that tho Company Bhall work, at the outset, ono steamboat and one smack, for tho purpose of deep soa fishing, and to carry on its operations in any waters that may be within eaßy distance of the Port of Wanganui. The temporary office of the Company wDI be situated onTaupo Quay, Wanganui, where all information respecting the Company may be obtained, and applications for Bhares made. It is proposed that the Company shall erect and carry on a Freezing works in Wanganui, so that a regular supply of fresh fish can be kept up at all seasons. It is estimated that fish to the value of over £2000 per annum, at retail prices, can be disposed of in and around WaDganui and the Townships contiguous to it. The following are some of the fishes that are available to the Company :—: — Flounder Hapufcn Herring Sehnapper Red Cod Gurnard Tra-falli Blue Cod Mackerel Mullet Soles Whitebait Kawhai Tho Wanganui Bar, and also tho position of the Port of Wanganui, have been a distinct drawback to any fishing industry as carried on in the present primitive manner, and it is confidently predicted that the markets of Wanganui and its neighbouring townships can consume a much larger quantity of fish than it has been possible to supply by tho means now in use. That fish may always be caught, and that there are large quantities in the Wanganui Bight at times, are factß beyond doubt : end it is also well known, that the Sounds and the | fishing grounds round the island of Kapifci, ' might bo made to contribute their marino riches to this market. It is hoped that the proposed Company will perform the double work of placing an abundant and regular supply of fish in our markets, which will I be a great boon to the public, and of paying a good dividend to the Bhareholdors as a reward for their enterprise. It is estimated that the above mentioned Company, having one steamboat and one sailing smack, would average 122 working days in the year, and that the earnings would average, for fresh fish in gross, £6 daily, per vessel, or a total of i 1464 as the results of the deep sea fishing, and £300 for river fißh, which can be caught when the weather is not fit for outside fishing, mßking a grand total or £1*764. The fishermen would work for two-thhds of the nett takings (that is, the gross takings, as above described, lees the working expenses of the Company). The other third would be the property of the Company, and should give a fair dividend to the shareholders. The firm of J. Whiting & Co. ofier their smack, the Castlecliff, and plant to the Company for £430 ; and Mr S. H; Whiting, one of the firm, offers to manage the Company, act as wholesale salesman, and in fact, do all the clerical and business works of the Company for ty per cent, on the gross sales, and will bind himself to do so for twelve months from the incorporation of the Company. MARKETS. If the Company have fish to the amount of £1764 to dispose of in twelve months, the following is a possible way of selling the same : — There la a sure market in Wanganui and the district round about it, for i' 27 worth per week, which would supply three hawkers with 30s worth each, per day. This is only n fraction over a halfpenny a week for each inhabitant, counting 10,000 as within their reach. Tho effect of a regular Bupply would probably be to increase tho demand very much, as intermittent supplies never create the demand that regular supplies do. The outlying districts of Wanganui might be expected to take fist to the amount of £25 per week. If the fish should be more than usually abundant, other markets can be found. Tho Provisional Directors have gone very carefully into the matter, and find that for tho sum of £2260 they can purchase Messrs Whiting & Cos. Plant and Interest, a small steamer, trawls, and a small Freezing machine, and erect a suitable Freezing Chamber well adapted for the purpose of tbe Company, and several suitable leasehold sights are available on which to erect the Company's building, at a reasonable rental. The Provisional Directors have also made full enquiries as to tho probable returns from both the Sea and Biver Fishing, and from an investigation into Messrs Whiting Bros, books they are confident that not less than £1404 wilt bo realised from the Sea fishing, and £300 from the River by line and net fishing alono, and aa they have every reason to believe that trawls can be successfully worked, the returns may be .much larger. They also estimate that after paying all Working Expenses, Fisherman's two-thirds, Interest, and allowing a fair sum tor depreciation, the net return to tho company will not be les3 than 1 per ceut , based upon Line Fishiug returns, £0 that this is a very fair return from Line Fißhing alone j and as we have before stated, we have every confidence in the ultimate success of tho Trawl Fishing, which will very greatly increase tne returns.
