Wauganui Wins Gold Medal for Best Shot in North Island,

Through tho courtcay of Captain Willis, we aro enabled to place botoro our reader tho circular issued from the Defence Office giving fcho roeiilts ot tho Pn/c Medal Firing Competitions. It will bo scon by reference thereto that Private J. Anderaon, of the Wanganui Rifles, is tho winner of tho gold medal for the best shot in tho North Island, with the splendid score o£ 95 points out of a possible 120. The conditions of tho competition -svovo — 200 yards standing, 300 yards kneeling, and 500 yards in any military position, 10 ishotg at each range. At 200 yards, Private Antlerson scored 31 ; at 300 yards, 35 j and at 500 yards, 30 points, a really meritorious performance, and as will be aeon, beating that mado by the winner ot the gold modal for the boat shot in the S-oiith Island (Privato O. Wood) by three points, his total scoro being 93. Tho silver modal for tha best shot in the district has been won by Private W. Churton, aUo of tho crack shooting corps, the Wanganui Rifles, with 89 points, which included 34 at 200 jards, 31 at 300 yards, 24 at 500 yard-i. This ecore it will be noticed is tho samo as thnt jrnido by Privato Noi tho, of tho Hastings Rifles, who has appropriated tho gold and silver medal for tho second best shot in tho North Island, and it is only ono behind that made by Corporal Forsylh, of the Riverton Rifles, for tho gold and silver modal for tho second best shot in the South Island. It will further bo noticed that tho shooting all round was consistently good, Westland running Wanganui very close for tho district medal with 89. Thn following is tho circular giving the remits :— Defence Office, Wellington, 18th May, 1891. j Circular No. 14.
